   Chrystel Lebas

 

 

 

Born in France, Chrystel Lebas currently lives and works in London. A graduate from the Royal College of Art (1997),
her photographs and films have been widely exhibited including in a recent major solo exhibition at Huis Marseille,
Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (2016-17) and at De Pont Museum, Tilburg (2020), The Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (2016-17);
The Photographers’ Gallery, London (2017); Maryland Art Space, Baltimore (2014); Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (2012);
Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka, Croatia (2011); The Collection and Usher Gallery, Lincoln (2011); National Media Museum,
Bradford (2009); Le Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, Paris (2008); The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2006);
Nichido Contemporary Arts, Tokyo (2003); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (1992).

Works are held in several private and public collections amongst them Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography Amsterdam,
The Scottish National Gallery, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale Paris,
The Collection and Usher Gallery, The Citigroup Private Bank and The Wilson Center for Photography.

She has published three monographs: L’espace temps-Time in Space (2003), Between Dog and Wolf (2006) and
Field Studies: Walking through Landscapes and Archives published to accompany the exhibition at Huis Marseille Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (2017)
that won the Kraszna Krausz Best Photography Book Award 2018 and Best Dutch book design 2016.
She has contributed to numerous Photography and Visual Arts journals: Amongst them, photographs and essay in The New York Times TMagazine, FT Magazine,
The Guardian, Source, Camera Austria, Exit and Portfolio Catalogue.

Research funded by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation supported the development of photographic and film works made in Scotland drawing from The Natural History Museum
collection of Sir Edward James Salisbury’s Botany photographs and The National Galleries of Scotland collections of photography by John Muir Wood.

Currently working on a new commission funded by The Wellcome Collection to develop an immersive installation, with Photography, Sound and Scent
that will be exhibited during the 'On Happiness' season starting in May 2020

Film produced by the Natural History Museum in London 'Looking at past habitats through a modern lens' by Sally Weale,
illustrates the project with the artist and scientists interviews and field work.
